Coaching & Training

Showjumping coaching built on biomechanics, flatwork and psychology.

HRB coaching is built around correct foundations: biomechanics-led flatwork, technical showjumping exercises and psychology-led routines that make confidence and consistency repeatable under pressure.

Riders come to HRB for showjumping coaching in Hertfordshire and from further afield for a calmer, more structured showjumping coaching UK approach. Every rider gets a clear plan, structured sessions and honest feedback. Progress is measurable. Standards are consistent. The work is always purposeful.

Some combinations benefit from rider support alongside more structured work for the horse. In those cases, our training livery route can work alongside coaching to build better consistency, confidence and progression on both sides.

For riders thinking about buying or changing horses, HRB's showjumping horse sourcing page explains how rider level, confidence, temperament and long-term fit are considered before the next step.

Technical clarity, confidence and competition preparation.

HRB coaching is designed around where the rider and horse are now. Some riders need technical showjumping support. Others need help with confidence, pressure or ring craft. Many need both. The first step is understanding what is really creating the inconsistency.

01

Technical Showjumping Coaching

For riders who need help with rhythm, balance, distances, straightness, rideability and jump technique. Biomechanics-led flatwork forms the foundation, with technical showjumping exercises layered on top so improvements carry from training into the ring.

02

Confidence and Rider Psychology

For riders whose nerves, pressure, fear or overthinking affect performance. HRB builds confidence through structure, repeatable routines and psychology-led coaching that helps the rider stay calmer, clearer and more consistent under pressure.

03

Competition Preparation

For riders preparing for shows, moving up a level or needing more structure around warm-up, course riding, decision-making and post-round review. The goal is to arrive at a show with a plan, not just hope the round goes well.

Coaching in Action

Calm structure. Clear progression.

How It Works

Assessment, structure, progress.

A simple, structured pathway for riders in Hertfordshire and across the UK so expectations are clear and progress is measurable from day one.

01
Step One

Assessment

We identify what is working, what is not, and the clearest route to progress. The assessment covers the horse, the rider, the technical picture and the mental game, so the plan is built on what is actually happening, not assumptions.

02
Step Two

Structured Plan

Clear focus for the next block of sessions with measurable outcomes. You know what we are working on, why it matters, and how we will know when it is improving. No guesswork. No vague feedback.

03
Step Three

Review and Refine

We refine performance habits so results carry into the ring. Each review block adjusts the plan based on what has improved, what needs more work, and what the next competition requires.

Tia Posner

Athlete · Founder · Psychology-Led Performance

Tia coaches showjumping with a precision that comes from two disciplines: high-performance riding and clinical psychology. She understands what holds riders back technically and what holds them back mentally, and she works on both simultaneously.

She remains active in the ring, most recently winning the 1.15 Class Final at Bolesworth International with Happy Fomia. That current competition experience keeps her coaching grounded in the preparation, decisions and pressure riders face when it counts. View the latest HRB results.

Sessions are calm, structured and honest. Riders leave with clarity on what to practise, why it matters and how to replicate it under pressure at a show. For riders who need deeper support around nerves, confidence or pressure, HRB also offers sports psychology for riders. Confidence is not something you find on the day. It is something you build in the weeks before it.

Dan Barnes

Horse Producer · Showjumping Coach · Director

Dan coaches from a producer's perspective, which means his focus is always on what the horse needs to develop correctly. He works on rideability, adjustability and the technical foundations that make showjumping horses genuinely competitive. His experience producing around 50 young horses gives him a precise eye for what is holding a horse back and the patience to fix it carefully.

Whether it is a young horse being introduced to fences or an established horse that needs rebuilding, Dan's approach is calm, systematic and always welfare-led. Riders working with Dan leave with a clearer picture of their horse and a plan that makes consistent progress possible in training and competition. The horse always tells you what it needs. You just have to be quiet enough to listen.

Psychology is not a side service at HRB. It is built into how we coach.

Confidence under pressure

Routines and mental frameworks that keep performance consistent when it counts, not just in training.

Calm decision-making

Riders learn to process the ring clearly and ride with intention, so fewer mistakes come from pressure, panic or uncertainty.

Consistency over time

Performance habits built in training so good rounds are not luck, they are the result of a repeatable system.
